"Segment Aura" is the truly nasty and unforgiving HNW project of Russia based noise head anonymous artist. Like most HNW projects there’s an obsession linked to the project, and S.A. obsession is various forms of simplicity, austerity and immobility. Clearly with a title like “Libido” your expecting nothing exciting, motivator or optimistic and these 60 minutes certainly mangers all of those words in spades. The stark black & white front sleeve picture features an assortment of various knifes or possible bullets ( it’s difficult to tell which as the covers so murky). And inside the sleeve is white text on pitch black backing; with just the projects name, the releases title being listed along with the words “Act I” all of which nicely sets you up for the barren and painful sonic bleakness inside. But nothing better to relax the mind and make it blank, to listen to SA, the leading exponent of STATIC NOISE I've heard in a long time, but compared to many other bands of harsh noise wall. However, the two bonus tracks role radically changed, and instead of being a hard wall and petrified, becomes a dusty AMBIENT NOISE WALL which decays only when touched. Not all HNW sounds like and not all people have the same ability to do so, the slightest changes, the tiny textures, you have to know where and when to place, so that the listener can feel something in the supposed "noise". Good job of course.

White Noise Dada

‘Libido’ is the amazingly heavy HNW assault from Segment Aura, a more recent project out of Russian Federation, with only this release to show its presence in the wall noise scene I had almost missed this one in the recent flurry of releases that have come out at the end of last year. After what sounds like a metal pipe falling on a concrete floor the first track explodes into a massive flow of electrifying static in the most brutal form I have heard recently and not in the lulling low end rumbling style, but in a fast paced tightly compressed wall of bass. Following that is a sped up crackling style wall which borders on the blasting style due to its rapid pace while clearly maintaining those sputtering qualities of the slower paced walls that have pops and crunching textures. Ultimately the disc ends with a mid-paced wall consisting of humming and grinding textures in an unchanging fashion. The intensity of this release can only be experience and it left a lasting impression on me as it maintained the repetitive style of wall and really unique textures were used in ways that prove that no dynamic could be total dynamic.

Meaningless Void

“Libido” is the first release from new and highly promising Russian Federation based HNW project Segment Aura. The album offers up three relatively short, but highly consistent slices of ‘wall-making’- making this certainly one of the best début HNWreleases I’ve come across this year.
The Cdr comes in a pro-printed thin card slightly oversized folder, and features plan but effective black on white printing with the cover featuring this great picture of what looks like a series of drawings of arms that have been fragment/ visual judder. Opening up the album we have the just over ten minutes of “Act 1” which starts out with a brief burst of radio fuzz like grain and a ring tone, then it drops into this great heavy duty wall of locked judder bound noise making. The ‘wall's’ a mixture of this juddering and idling van or road drill tone, and this skipping shovel inside a moving cerement like mixer scape ‘n’ jitter. The tracks a perfect mixture of broodiness, crude locked industrial edginess and trance inducing ‘wall making’
Up second we have another ten minute track in the form of “Act 2” and this track is all about crude and caustic bound jittering static patterns that seemily get more crusty, nasty and enclosing as the track goes on. The jitters seem to grow new jitters ,and the whole track just seems surrounds and engulfs in a truly wonderfully busy, brutal yet ultimately very pleasing way. Lastly we have the baby of the bunch in the form of “Act 3” which comes in at just over the seven minute mark. Compared with the first two tracks this track is built around less crude and nasty sounding tones , and it finds Segment Aura offering up a rolling mid-tone drone that’s run over by smaller skipping yet controlled static tones. To my mind this is the slightly weaker track of the three tracks here as it doesn’t really jump out and attack you in the same way as the other two tracks do. But that’s not saying the track isn’t still very worthwhile or appealing- it is, it’s just it’s not quite in same league as the other tracks & rather takes things a little safely.
So “Libido” is extremely focused and conceived first release from this Russian Federation HNW act that seemingly appeared from nowhere. With out doubt one of this years HNW highlights!
