After a few years away from the walled noise scene, Chitin sees the welcome return of this Russian Federation project. The CDR/ digital download album features two twelve to-fifteen minute 'walls' that are both skillful crafted & wholly captivating in their attack.
The physical version of the album finds the pro-pressed CDR coming in a DVD case. This features monochrome pictures, that look like they might be microscope images of repeated textures of organic material. The CDR came in an edition of ten copies, and as of writing this review the label still has copies left.
Segment Aura started live in 2010 and has slowly but surely put out around ten releases- taking in stand-alone albums & splits. The project certainly is in no way prolific, compared with the often very prolific walled noise scene, but I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve heard from the project- as their work always shows there’s thought, passion, and enough invention put into their wall-noise work- that has in the past added in subtle elements of electronica, industrial, and beat-bound elections into their wall-work.
Both tracks here are untitled- the first track finds the bringing together of tight pitter-pattering bass textures, hacking judders, and closely snipped crisp pops ‘n’ snaps. These elements are woven together in a very urgent, detailed, and balanced manner- that all makes for a highly captivating wall, which could have been easily twice its length. It is all enhanced by the effective use of sonic illusion that the layers are switching in their intensity- but in reality I believe the wall is very much firm & fixed in both its intentions & layout; save until it's last few minutes when we get a few sudden bass drags/purr- before going back into the tight & taut texturing once more.
The second and final track feels a bit less tense & precise, though no less rapid than the first track. Here we find a constantly churning and rattling low end, this is blended with a selection micro shovel & snapping textures. The whole ‘wall’ has quite a downed-out covey machine belt quality to it's sound, yet at the same time small & detailed. It’s another worthy wall.
It’s always nice to see walled noise acts reappeared after some years on sonic slumber, and I must say that Chitin is a pretty damn good comeback- and as I mentioned early this release is still presently available in its physical form…
